Apples: A Visual Guide

Macoun Apple: A cross between McIntosha and Jersey Black. For myself, it's the epitome of the perfect apple: crisp, white flesh with lots of tart, sweet juice in every bite!
Macoun: the epitome of the perfect apple.

Spurned by my great disdain for Red Delicious apples and boredom with Granny Smith apples, I’ve spent the last week scouring the farmers’ markets and local orchards for unique apple varietals with sweet, tart and crisp flesh. Cook’s Thesaurus compiled a visual guide of common apple varieties that I used as my starting point. This list is hardly exhaustive as some varieties, like Macoun, have short seasons and are only available locally. If you’re feeling adventurous, browse through a more comprehensive list of apple varietals on Orange Pippin: http://www.orangepippin.com/apples.  It’s just one more reason to head to the apple orchard where you’re sure to find a hidden treasure.
